Spartans Prevail at West Chester, 6-3

WEST CHESTER, PA – St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s tennis swept all three doubles matches en route to a tough road victory over West Chester University, 6-3.  Taking a 3-0 into singles action, the Spartans held off the hard-charging Golden Rams to win at second, third, and sixth singles to win the match.

Andreu Ferragut ’18 (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) avenged a loss to Tony Deimler a year ago to win at second singles, 7-5, 6-3 in what is turning out to be one of the best rivalries on the East Coast.  With the match at 4-1 in favor of the Spartans, Aaron Stahl ’18 (Dusseldorf, Germany) won at third singles 6-3, 6-4 for the decisive fifth point while Roger Almato ’19 (Vic, Spain) won 6-3, 6-1 at sixth singles to round out the scoring.  Javier Munoz ’17 (Sevilla, Spain) lost in the third set match tie break.

Munoz, Stahl, and Ferragut have combined for an 11-6 overall record in singles play so far this season. With the win, St. Thomas Aquinas remains undefeated on the season at 4-0.

West Chester, who swept both matches against the Spartans a year ago and finished the season ranked #8 in the Atlantic Region polls, falls to 1-1.  The Spartans return to action at home on Friday, October 9 vs. Kutztown University at 1:30 PM.
