Spartan Men's Tennis, Marcel Volz Regionally Ranked to Close 2018-2019 Season

Sparkill, NY – After yet another record-setting season, the St. Thomas Aquinas College men's tennis team finished the year ranked sixth in the final Oracle/ITA East region poll.  The Spartans finished with a 14-6 overall record, advancing to the East Coast Conference tournament finals and earning a bid to their first ever NCAA East Region tournament.  Along the way, the team set program records for total wins, winning a program best eight matches in a row, and were also ranked as high as sixth in the NCAA East region poll.

Freshman Marcel Volz '22 (Iffezheim, Germany) finished the season as the 11th-ranked singles player in the region – the highest ranking of any Spartan in program history.  Volz was named ECC Rookie and Player of the Year while earning 1st team All-ECC recognition.  He finished the season with a 16-7 singles record and compiled 28 combined singles and doubles victories.  The total is good for the fourth-best single season ever at STAC.

In addition, junior Enej Hasicevic '20 (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) concluded the season with a 31-11 overall singles and doubles record.  The total puts second in Spartan history for combined wins, while his 16 doubles victories with partner Paul Voigt '21 (Cologne, Germany) set a single season record.  Hasicevic now has 81 career wins, good for fourth all-time.  He is currently fourth all-time in singles wins with 38 and second all-time in doubles wins with 43.  Both Hasicevic and Voigt were awarded with 2nd Team All-ECC recognition.

The 14 wins are yet another program record for STAC and head coach Matt Capell.  He has guided the Spartans to the four best seasons in school history - setting program bests for wins or winning percentage in four of his five years at the helm.
