PHILADELPHIA, PA – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men’s Tennis team wasted no time securing their first dual match victory of the season, as they took down regional foe Jefferson University, 7-0, in the City of Brotherly Love.  The Spartans swept all nine contests of the day for the win.

After winning at third, first, and second doubles, respectively, STAC clinched the match by winning in record time at sixth, second, and fifth singles.  Junior Paul Voigt ’21 (Cologne, Germany) took a 6-0, 6-2 decision at sixth singles, showcasing deft hands at the net.  Sophomore Marcel Volz ‘22 (Iffezheim, Germany) was next, taking a 6-1, 6-2 decision at second singles, while senior Tim Fleerkamp ’20 (Waalre, Netherlands) took the clincher 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles.

Odysseas Papaioannou ’22 (Thessaloniki, Greece) won at first singles despite being down 3-1 in both sets.  Roberto Chong ’21 (Puigpunyent, Spain) fell behind 3-0 in the first set before winning twelve of the next thirteen games to take the win.  After an unfortunate tennis ball can incident delayed the start of the fourth singles match, Alvaro Barranco ’21 (Lleida, Spain) cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win to round out the scoring.

The win marks the sixth consecutive victory over Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University).  Next up for the Spartans is an away contest at West Chester University on Wednesday, October 9.  First serve is set for 2 PM, weather permitting.
