Men's Tennis Opens 2020 Spring Season with 7-0 Triumph over Staten Island

ORANGEBURG, NY – At Match Point Tennis Club, the St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s tennis team pushed their record to 4-0 overall with a 7-0 triumph over the College of Staten Island on Saturday.  The Spartans clinched the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles. 

Senior co-captain Luke Taplin ’20 (Auckland, New Zealand) was first on the board during the singles portion, winning 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles to make it a 2-0 match lead for the hosts.  Paul Voigt ’21 (Cologne, Germany) followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles, while Tony Khamassi ’23 (Cannes la Boca, France) took the clincher 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth slot.  Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans were Matt Corsie ’20 (Stony Point, NY) at sixth singles, Roberto Chong ’21 (Puigpunyent, Spain) at first singles, and Alvaro Barranco ’21 (Lleida, Spain) at second singles.

The Spartans have shut out all four opponents so far on the year, and are next in action on Sunday as they take on Stonehill College in a match hosted at the Queens College Tennis Center.  First serve is set for 3:00 PM.
