SPARKILL, NY – The St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s tennis team’s upset bid against Queens College fell just short on Saturday, as the host Spartans lost to visiting Queens 4-3.  A much improved doubles performance by the hosts unfortunately yielded the same result as Friday.  Playing shorthanded, STAC defaulted the third doubles slot and dropped second doubles 6-4, before Kas Roosch ’21 (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) and Ivan Laiz ’24 (La Orotava, Spain) would win 7-5 at the first position.

            Grad student Matt Corsie ’20 ’21 (Stony Point, NY) would drop his fifth singles match 6-0, 6-0 to make the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors before the home team would go on the attack.  Alvaro Barranco ’21 (Lleida, Spain) would make it 3-1 with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles, and Laiz would get it to 3-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles, setting up two huge matchups at the top slot.

            Lennart Lehmann ’24 (Dusseldorf, Germany) won his first set at first singles 6-2 against nationally-ranked No. 48 Tim Ostheimer, while Roosch would drop his first set 6-3.  Lehmann would then drop his second set 6-2, forcing a third set.  Roosch saw himself down 3-0 in the second, but battled back to make it a match before bowing out 6-3.  Lehmann regained his footing in the third set to take the win 6-3, while remaining undefeated in singles play for the season.

            The Spartans are next up as they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on East Coast Conference opponent Daemen College for two matches on Monday and Tuesday, April 26 & 27.
