Spartans Fight To Force Fifth Set; Fall Short Against D'Youville

Hillburn, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball team earned their first-ever set victory on Sunday afternoon, and then picked up a second victory to force a winner-takes-all fifth and deciding set against D'Youville University at the Joseph T. St. Lawrence Community Center (Torne Valley Sports Complex). Despite playing an inspired match filled with thrilling and some times heart-stopping action, the Spartans came up short in five sets, 3-2.

STAC falls to 0-6 on the season, while D'Youville remains perfect at 4-0.

How it Happened

  • As a team, D'Youville recorded 49 kills compared to STAC's 44. The Saints also had a 17 blocks and 46 assists, while the Spartans tallied 10.5 blocks and 42 assists.
  • Nicholas Santos (OH/OPP) paced the Spartans offense with a match-high 14 kills on Sunday. He also registered seven digs, a solo block and a block assist.
  • Andre Cippiciani (OH/OPP) recorded a team-high nine digs in the match.
  • Kyran Versteegen (S) tallied 30 serve assists (6.0 assists/set), eight kills, one service ace, four digs, one solo block and three block assists for the maroon and gold. He also had a match-best .429 hitting percentage.
  • Gabriel Vieira (OH/OPP) racked up 11 kills, six digs and a block assist for the Spartans.
  • James Feuchtgruber (MB) picked up three kills, two digs a solo block and three block assists.
