Spartans Fall in ECC Opener at LIU Post, 8-1 & 4-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's softball team dropped a pair of games to host LIU Post today in season-opening action in East Coast Conference play for both teams. LIU posted 8-1 and 4-1 victories.

Breanna Klaiber's two-run homer in the fifth inning broke open a pitching duel between STAC's Briana Keaveney and LIU's Hannah Olshevski to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead. Klaiber's double helped fuel a three-run outburst in the sixth inning that sealed the game.

The Lady Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Amanda Leone's RBI single scoring Ashley Landolina. STAC threatened again in the second inning but Kelcy McGeehan was thrown out at home to end the rally. Landolina finished with two hits.

In the second game, STAC's Colleen Borum pitched well but was outdueled by LIU's Katie Humhej, who struck out 10 batters enroute to her fourth win in 10 decisions. Borum went the distance and struck out three batters. The Pioneers scored three runs in the fifth inning to build on a 1-0 lead. Julia Seader's leadoff home run and Klaiber's run-producing double sparked the rally. Seader finished with three hits.

"LIU is one of the conference's top teams with some of its top players," said STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan. "Colleen pitched well in the second game and I thought there were many positive elements to our play that we can build on."

The Lady Spartans next play host to Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
