Borum Strong on the Mound as Spartans Earn Split with LIU Post

Colleen Borum's strong pitching helped the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's softball team record an exciting, come-from-behind 5-2 win over LIU Post to hand the Pioneers their first loss in ECC play this season today at Spartan Field. LIU won the nightcap, 5-2.

The Lady Spartans lifted their conference record to 5-7 and 10-20 overall while LIU Post moved to 20-12 and 9-1 in the ECC.

The Lady Spartans erased a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the third inning on five hits highlighted by Amanda Schweitzer's line drive RBI single to centerfield. In the fifth inning, STAC exhibited the aggressive style offense that has sparked its strong play over the last two weeks. Ashley Landolina's single and Melissa Sadler's walk opened the inning before Kelcy McGeehan advanced them with a sacrifice bunt. An infield error, Amanda Leone's RBI squeeze bunt and Brittany Malloy's run-scoring sacrifice fly put STAC up to stay, 5-2.

"Our offense has improved now to the point that we can win games in a lot of different ways," said Kristen Sullivan, STAC's head coach. "We had a few well executed bunt plays coupled with clutch hits to rally from behind today. I was proud of the way the girls fought back against a quality opponent."

Colleen was effective again for the winners. The junior right hander yielded only five hits and kept the potent LIU Post offense in check with an impressive blend of velocity and location. She outdueled LIU Post's Hannah Olshevski, who lost for only the fourth time in 15 decisions. Sadler (center field) and Landolina (shortstop) played well defensively. Landolina was also the offensive standout again with three hits to push her batting average to .436.

In the second game, the Pioneers scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Pitcher Katie Humhej allowed only four hits to register her eighth win and second of the season over STAC. Morgan Santora clubbed her first collegiate homer, and Landolina scored on a Sadler RBI single, accounting for the only two runs of contest for the Spartans.

The Lady Spartans continue ECC play on Monday with a doubleheader against visiting Mercy College that begins at 2:30 p.m.
