Amanda Leone's two homers in the opener and Caitlyn Francoeur's clutch two-run single in the second game propelled St. Thomas Aquinas College to a doubleheader sweep of Molloy College today in East Coast Conference women's softball play at Spartan Field. STAC won by scores of 9-0 (5-Innings) and 5-4.

The sweep allowed the Lady Spartans to finish the season with several milestones:

  • STAC finished the season in fifth place with a 9-15 record, the highest place ECC finish in at least a decade.
  • The nine wins represent the most conference wins in the program since 2011.
  • The first win over Molloy, one of the ECC's annual powerhouses, since 2008.

"This is a very positive way to finish the season for our team," said Kristen Sullivan, the STAC head coach. "We have so many players returning next year so sweeping a top program like Molloy is a great confidence builder and will help motivate us in the off season."

Leone's three-run homer in the first inning keyed a four-run rally and teammate Ashley Landolina followed with a solo homer in the second inning to push STAC to a 5-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Leone followed with another three-run homer in the fourth inning. Briana Keaveney allowed only two hits to post the victory.

Francoeur's two-run single helped the Lady Spartans erase a 2-1 deficit before Molloy scored two runs in the seventh inning to regain a 4-3 advantage. The Lady Spartans rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to register a walk-off victory. Kelcy McGeehan's double was the big hit in the inning for the winners.

Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the Lady Spartans recognized the team's four seniors as part of the program's Senior Day ceremony. The four seniors honored were Brittany Malloy, Briana Emanuele, Alyssa Sinski and Danielle DiModugno.

"Senior Day is always a special occasion for the program," said Sullivan. "Brittany, Briana, Alyssa and Danielle all contributed to our program in different ways and they will be missed."

The Lady Spartans finished the season with a 14-30 record.
