Outstanding pitching performances by Colleen Borum and Briana Keaveney propelled the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's softball team to a pair of 3-1 wins over Queens College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader today at Spartan Field. The wins evened STAC's conference record at 3-3 and improved its overall mark to 8-16.

"I'm pleased with the way we've played since returning from our Florida trip," said STAC head coach Kristen Sullivan. "Today, Colleen and Briana consistently stayed ahead of the hitters and we played solid defense behind them."

Borum allowed only five hits and was in control throughout the game. Offensively, Kelcy McGeehan was the star for the Lady Spartans. The junior second baseman broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run over the centerfield fence. The big hit culminated a 10-pitch at bat that saw McGeehan foul off several pitches to stay alive before slamming her first homer of the season. McGeehan had earlier tied the game with a run-scoring single to score Keaveney.

In the second game, Keaveney's effective pitching was supported by the excellent defensive play of third baseman Amanda Schweitzer. With STAC leading 3-0 in the sixth inning, Queens loaded the bases with one out. Schweitzer then made a sliding catch of a foul pop up near the STAC dugout and then ended the threat with a beautiful diving stop of a grounder in the hole. Keaveney, who finished with five strikeouts, helped her own cause with a defensive gem in the first inning when she fielded a slow grounder and flipped the ball from her glove to first base for the out.

STAC's Ashley Landolina continued her tremendous offensive play. The sophomore's two-run homer in the second game broke open a close game and she finished the day with four hits. She now leads the ECC in hitting with a sizzling .481 average and is also second in home runs (4) and fourth in stolen bases (6).

"Ashley has become a force at the plate for us," said Sullivan. "She is truly an all-round offensive threat. She hits for high average and for power and can also steal bases. I'm very proud of Ashley because no one works harder than she does."

The Lady Spartans next visit Molloy College tomorrow in an ECC doubleheader that begins at noon.
