Della Vecchia and Toothaker Dominate in the Circle, As Softball Sweeps Queens, 2-1 & 6-0

Paige Toothaker took a perfect game into the seventh inning enroute to a one-hit shutout and Carissa Della Vecchia tossed a three-hitter to propel St. Thomas Aquinas College to 6-0 and 2-1 wins over host Queens College in East Coast Conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon.

The win lifted STAC’s overall record to 15-3 and 9-1 in the ECC. Queens fell to 2-12 overall and 2-12 in conference play.

Toothaker, named the ECC Pitcher of the Week yesterday after winning three games last week, retired the first 19 batters before Cyarra Alvarado stroked a clean single to left field to break up the perfect game. The senior lefty received outstanding defensive support from Nikki MacDonald (shortstop), Amanda Castro (second base) and Rudae Castro (third base). Amanda Castro had three hits, two runs and two RBI to lead a balanced offensive attack. Gadson added her second homer of the season.

In the first game, Della Vecchia starred on the mound and with the bat. The junior fanned 12 batters and walked only one batter to increase her record to 8-1. She led off the game with a single and scored on Missy Sadler’s triple. Della Vecchia scored STAC’s second run on MacDonald’s RBI infield grounder. Emma Wimmer pitched well for Queens.

“Paige’s performance today was outstanding and Carissa bounced back from her first loss last weekend,” said STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan. “I thought we played very solid defense today and our bats came alive in the second game. Sweeping a conference doubleheader is always important in the push to the postseason.”

STAC next plays on Thursday, April 22 against the College of Staten Island in an ECC doubleheader at begins at 2:30 p.m. at Spartan Field in Sparkill.
