STAC Softball Drops Doubleheader As Adelphi Pitchers Throw Gems
Garden City, N.Y. - Claire Fon and Lindsey Hibbs pitched back-to-back perfect games to carry Adelphi University to a sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Janet L. Finke Field in Garden City, N.Y. Adelphi won the first game, 11-0, in five innings and scored a 5-0 victory in the second game.
 
The two pitching gems helped Adelphi register its ninth win in its last 10 games and improve overall to 13-7. Adelphi, which has reached the NCAA Division II post-season tournament in nine straight seasons, was picked to finish first in the highly competitive Northeast-10 conference in the pre-season coaches poll.
 
Fon, a junior from Shrub Oak, N.Y., struck out six enroute to her masterpiece. She has allowed only 18 runs in 53 innings of work this season for an earned run average of 1.43. Teammate Ziara Shreter led the offense with three hits, three runs and a stolen base. The winners exploded for seven runs in the second innings to break open the game..
 
Hibbs, a sophomore from Brampton, Ontario, retired 21 straight batters to record her memorable win. She struck out the first three batters of the game and never looked back. She finished with eight strikeouts. Shreter had three more hits to pace the offense. 
 
STAC's starter Carissa Della Vecchia surrendered four runs in the first inning but finished strong. 
 
St. Thomas Aquinas, which fell to 4-11, next hosts the University of Bridgeport on Friday (March 25) to open its East Coast Conference schedule, in a doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.
