STAC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Post

Waterbury, Conn. - Home runs by Emilie Olivier, Rudae Gadson and Carissa Della Vecchia helped St. Thomas Aquinas College split a pair of non-conference softball games today against host Post University. Post won the first game, 5-4, and STAC scored a 6-0 victory in the second game.

The split pushed STAC's record to 11-12 while Post moved to 9-11. The first game setback broke the Spartans' six-game winning streak.

In the second game, senior captain Amanda Castro got STAC on the scoreboard with a run-producing single in the first inning to score freshman Amanda Demmerle. Olivier and Emilee Mayer drove in runs in the third inning to increase the lead to 3-0 before Olivier blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Della Vecchia's homer in the seventh inning capped the scoring.

Della Vecchia followed her no-hit performance last week with another splendid effort. The senior lefty surrendered only two hits and registered 12 strikeouts. Demmerle scored three runs.

In the first game, Gadson's clutch two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie before Post rallied for three runs in the last of the seventh inning. Mayer and Demmerle each had two hits for STAC.

STAC next meets Mercy College on Thursday in a East Coast Conference doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m. at Spartan Field.
