Sparkill, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College remained unbeaten in East Coast Conference action with a pair of softball wins over D'Youville University at Spartan Field. STAC won the first game, 4-3, in eight innings and registered a 2-1 win in the second game.
The victories pushed STAC above the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 13-12 overall record that includes nine wins in its last 10 games. STAC is now 6-0 in ECC play.
Superb mound work continued to be the theme for the streaking Lady Spartans. In the first game, freshman Abbie Landrum surrendered a three-run home run to Hannah Bardeen but then logged eight highly effective innings, while her teammates fought back on offense. STAC rallied for three runs to knot the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning. Amanda Castro and Emilee Mayer started the rally with singles and Rudae Gadson, Amanda Schweitzer and Carissa Della Vecchia drove in runs in the stanza. Carissa Della Vecchia's double in the bottom of the eighth delivered the deciding run to give Landrum her sixth win in 13 decisions. Mayer finished with three hits.
Della Vecchia kept the momentum going in the second game with another stellar mound performance. The senior lefty twirled a nifty two-hitter and struck out 13 while receiving good defensive support from Mayer (right field) and Amanda Schweitzer (catcher). Castro drove in both STAC runs with singles.
STAC next meets Mercy College Sunday in an ECC doubleheader at Spartan Field that begins at 11 am. The program's annual Alumni Game is scheduled to follow at 3 p.m.
