STAC Sprint Football Falls at Army, 42-0

West Point, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Sprint Football team fell to the Army Black Knights, 42-0, on Friday evening at Shea Stadium on the campus of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Army improved its record to 4-1 and 3-0 in the CSFL North, while STAC drops to 1-5 and 0-3 within the North Division.

STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Mahki Matthews led the way with four receptions for 64 yards, with his longest catch being a 45 yarder.
  • Bo Maroney garnered 15 rushing attempts for 15 total yards.
  • Tyreke Smith registered eight tackles (7 solo, 1 assist) in the game.
  • Starting quarterback Dennis Riordan completed 8 of 27 passes, for 109 yards, while throwing two interceptions. He also had nine rush attempts for 24 total yards.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • Donovan Mannion would grab the first of his three TD catches, a 23-yard pass from Army QB JC Watson, to the endzone giving the Black Knights the early 7-0 advantage.
  • Just before the end of the quarter, Watson and Mannion would connect again, this time on a 32-yard strike to give Army a two touchdown lead at 14-0.

 
Second Quarter

  • Before the end of the first half, the Black Knights would take a 21-0 lead on a Jeremiah Garret four yard scamper into the endzone.

 
Third Quarter

  • Sammy Whipple scored on a 61-yard interception return of a Dennis Riordan pass, making it 28-0 Army early in the quarter.
  • Minutes later, Donovan Mannion took another JC Watson pass to the house, on a catch totaling 33 yards, pushing the Black Knights lead to 35-0.

 
Fourth Quarter

  • Scott Belveal would close out the scoring for Army early in the final quarter, on a two yard run into the endzone, giving the hosts a 42-0 margin and ultimately the shutout victory.

 

UP NEXT
St. Thomas Aquinas will enter its bye week for the last weekend in October, and will return to action in their final contest of the 2021 season on Saturday, November 6 against Chestnut Hill College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex, with on-field Senior Day festivities to precede the game between the Spartans and Griffins.
