Spartans Suffer 35-29 Overtime Setback to Mansfield

Hillburn, N.Y. Despite four touchdowns and a field goal by the offense, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Sprint Football team suffered a 35-29 overtime setback to Mansfield University on Friday evening at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn.

STAC falls to 1-3 overall in 0-2 in the CSFL North Division, while Mansfield improves to 3-1 and 2-0 in the CSFL North.

 

STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Elijah Rojas scored twice on two receptions totaling 20 yards, with the longest being a 16-yard TD catch from Dennis Riordan.
  • Elionexis Lopez took a 97-yard TD pass from Riordan to the end zone, after escaping several Mansfield defenders attempts to tackle Lopez to the ground.  
  • Starting quarterback Dennis Riordan completed 18 of 32 passes, for 303 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing two interceptions.
  • Tyreke Smith led the way for the Spartan defense once again, making 10 tackles (5 solo, 5 Assist), while Esmond Oldums and Ryan Kenny each picked off Mansfield QB Cahsid Raymond.
  • Bo Maroney was 1-for-1 in field goal attempts, making a 41-yarder in the first quarter. He was also 2-for-3 on extra points.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • Cahsid Raymond would open the scoring for Mansfield on a 69-yard TD run to make it 7-0.
  • A Bo Maroney 41-yard field goal would put get STAC within four at 7-3.
  • Dennis Riordan's one yard scamper into the endzone would put STAC on top 9-7 just before the end of the first quarter.

 
Second Quarter

  • Elijah Rojas would score the first of his two TDs on the day via a 16-yard strike by Dennis Riordan to make it 15-7 STAC.
  • Elionexis Lopez took a 97-yard pass from Riordan to the house after shaking off multiple attempts by Mansfield defenders to bring him to the ground, to increase the Spartan lead to 22-7.

 
Third Quarter

  • Mansfield would make it 22-14 on a Brian Bogaczyk two yard run six minutes into the third quarter.
  • A Cahsid Raymond eight yard TD run and a Eugene Haynes pass catch from Raymond on the subsequent two-point conversion would tie the score at 22 apiece, with seconds left in the quarter.

 
Fourth Quarter

  • Cahsid Raymond's third rushing TD of the game, a seven yard run, with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter put Mansfield on top for the first time since the early first quarter at 29-22.
  • Elijah Rojas would tally his second receiving touchdown of the contest on a four yard pass from Dennis Riordan with just under four minutes to go in regulation to even the score at 29-29.

Overtime

  • STAC would possess the ball first in OT on the Mansfield 25-yard line, but would turn it over on an interception by Dennis Riordan.
  • Mansfield would take the ball next on the STAC 25, but would fail to score as a Logan Shull field goal would be blocked and recovered by the Spartans.
  • On the next STAC possession, from the Mansfield 25, Riordan would complete a pass to Jayden Bennermon, who would then lose the football on a fumble, giving it back to the Mountaineers.
  • The visitors would get one more drive from the STAC 25-yard line, but would turn the ball over once again on a missed Shull field goal, which went wide left.
  • As the teams moved sudden death overtime, which gives each team one play from 4-yard line, Dennis Riordan would throw an incomplete pass to Hassan Blakney to turn the ball back over to Mansfield.
  • The Mountaineers would score on their subsequent drive from the STAC 4-yard line, as Brian Bogaczyk ran the ball into the endzone to give Mansfield the 35-29 victory.
