Eggink Career Highs Boost STAC Women's Hoops Over Nyack, 77-60

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team defeated Nyack College, 77-60, in the opener of the Dominican College Tournament in Blauvelt on Friday night. Sabrina Eggink was a dominant force with career-highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds as the Lady Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season, with Nyack falling to 0-4.

An evenly-played start resulted in the teams being tied at 11-11 midway through the first half, but a Colleen Ames three- pointer staked STAC to a 16-11 advantage. Nyack would erase a six-point deficit with a 9-1 run, taking a 24-22 edge in a see-saw battle that saw the score tied on eight different occasions.

Eggink would take charge in the waning minutes, reeling off five straight points which, combined with another Ames trey, gave the Lady Spartans a 30-25 halftime edge.

Continuing the theme after the break, STAC would increase its margin to eight at 47-39, only to see the Warriors claw back to even the score once again. With the score tied at 49-49, Ames dialed long distance yet again, and her bomb at the 6:16 mark proved to be the one to open the flood gates.

After Nyack's quick field goal to answer, the Lady Spartans would charge away, reeling off the next 17 points in a torrid span of 2:19. STAC would hit six straight field goals in that span, with Briana Cook getting the ball rolling with a pair of "and-one" hoops, and Ames added two more from downtown to key the outburst.

Ames would record 17 points in all, coming off the bench to nail five three-pointers, with Cook and Kristen Olsen also aiding the bench brigade with 10 points apiece, as STAC's super-subs outscored their opponents by a 42-14 margin.

STAC returns to action to play the hosts in the Dominican Tourney, with tip-off time set for 2:00 pm. The Lady Spartans will then have a week between games before opening the East Coast Conference schedule against the University of District of Columbia on Saturday, November 23 at Aquinas Hall. The tip-off is set for 1:00 pm, as the front end of a double-header featuring the men's teams starting at 3:00.
