STAC Attacks Nyack; Lady Spartans Roll to 74-33 Victory

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team won its fourth straight game, a dominant 74-33 performance at Nyack College. The Lady Spartans remain undefeated on the season at 4-0, with Nyack falling to 0-3. Kellyann Averill led the way for STAC, tying a career high with 16 points.

Despite the final margin, Nyack held tough thorough the first quarter. Averill's bucket served as the only points through the first three minutes before Yamalis Villegas gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead with a deep jumper. Emily Preston scored and Alex Bertolino hit a three to put STAC on top, but the hosts scored four straight to draw even at 7-7 with under four minutes left.

Chelsea Murphy's trey keyed a 7-0 run but Nyack answered with five of their own, as STAC held a 14-12 lead after 10 minutes. From there, the Lady Spartans owned the evening, outscoring their foes by a 60-21 chasm the rest of the way. Jenna Erickson opened the floodgates with a three pointer, as the visitors grabbed an 8-1 run, holding Nyack without a field goal for nearly five minutes. Late three pointers by Erickson and Julia Winnik opened a 32-20 lead at half, and St. Thomas Aquinas pressed the advantage the rest of the way.

STAC's defense kept the Warriors off the board for the first 5:28 of the third quarter, and the Lady Spartans continued their domination to the tune of a 42-13 margin over the final 20 minutes. It marked the second time in as many games that St. Thomas Aquinas held opponents under 40 points, on the heels of a 56-34 victory over New Haven on Wednesday. Winnik and Erickson chipped in with 11 each, while Bryanna Brown led Nyack by tying for the game high of 16 points, including four of the six field goals her team recorded overall.

The Lady Spartans will now break for the Thanksgiving holiday, returning to action by hosting Concordia College on Sunday, November 26, at Aquinas Hall at 1:00 pm. They will then be visited by Caldwell for a big regional match-up on Wednesday, November 29, with a 5:30 tip.
