Lady Spartans Charge Past Queens in 64-50 Victory

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team jumped on top early and cruised to a 64-50 victory in an East Coast Conference game at Queens College. The Lady Spartans are now 16-3 on the season with an 8-1 record to leave them alone in 2nd place in the ECC.  Queens dropped to 8-9, 4-5 with the setback in a game that was broadcast on ESPN3.

With the teams tied at five at nearing the midway point of the first quarter, the Lady Spartans stormed to a 17-0 run and the margin was never less than double-figures from there. Adiya Henderson hit three straight hoops and Alex Bertolino added the next two in the decisive run, with STAC holding a 22-7 lead after one quarter. Jenna Erickson added six second-quarter points as the visitors opened a 40-20 gap at intermission.

STAC's lead reached as high as 21 points in the second half, with Queens drawing no closer than 14 the rest of the way. Erickson led all scorers with 17 points, while Bertolino contributed 12 for the victors. Beth Bonin paced the Knights with 16, with Merrick Rowland chipping in 13. St. Thomas Aquinas forced 28 turnovers while yielding just 19 themselves.

The Lady Spartans play their next four in a row at home, returning to Aquinas Hall to host Molloy College in a 1:00 pm start on Saturday, January 27, in "Take a Kid to the Game" Day. Queens visits for the second meeting of the teams in six days on Tuesday, January 30, Daemen pays a call on Friday, Feburary 2, and Roberts Wesleyan closes out the homestand on Sunday, February 4.
