Lady Spartans Win 7th Straight, Cruise Past Bridgeport, 75-40

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rolled to a 75-40 East Coast Conference victory over the University of Bridgeport at Aquinas Hall. The Lady Spartans have won seven straight and now stand at 22-3 overall, their highest win total in the 10-year tenure of Head Coach Kim Lusk. With their 14-1 ECC mark, they retain sole possession of first place in the conference and are just one win from clinching a bye into the conference tournament semi-finals, to be held at Roberts Wesleyan College. Bridgeport dropped to 8-17, 5-10 with the loss.

As they did two nights earlier in a win over Mercy, the Lady Spartans set the tempo early with stifling defense, holding their foes without a point for nearly five minutes in building a 10-0 lead. Jenna Erickson hit a pair of threes to highlight that outburst, with the hosts holding a 19-8 lead after one quarter. They continued the theme in the second quarter, holding the Purple Knights scoreless for over six minutes as the gap increased to 30-8.

Madison Amalia closed the half with a trey to make the score 43-19, and Bridgeport recorded just three field goals in a third quarter that ended with a 66-31 margin, with St. Thomas Aquinas cruising to victory.

Four STAC starters hit for double-figures with Emily Preston recording game-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Alex Bertolino (14 points), Erickson (12), and Adiya Henderson (11) also led the charge. Kayla Hill was the lead scorer for UB, coming off the bench to record 11 points. STAC forced 27 turnovers while allowing just 13, and outrebounded the visitors by a 41-30 margin.

The Lady Spartans return to Aquinas Hall on Wednesday, February 14, hosting New York Institute of Technology in a 5:30 pm start, with men's action to follow. They travel to LIU Post for a showdown on Saturday, February 17, before closing out the regular season at home against University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, February 24.
