Seniors Shine as Lady Spartans Close Regular Season with 84-60 Win over UDC

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team closed out the 2017-18 regular season with an 84-60 East Coast Conference triumph over the University of the District of Columbia at Aquinas Hall. The Lady Spartans, who retained their #4 ranking in this week's NCAA East Region ranking, take a 24-4 record overall along with their 16-2 conference mark into this week's ECC Women's Basketball Tournament. STAC finished with the #2 seed and receives a first round bye to the semi-finals on Saturday, March 3, at Voller Athletic Center at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY. The Lady Spartans will play the second game of the day, with a 2:30 pm tip, opponents are to be determined.

All three seniors recorded double-figures as Jenna Erickson poured in 34 points to lead the attack, with Adiya Henderson adding 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Alex Bertolino contributing 10. Daeja Quick was high scorer for UDC with 15.

Erickson opened the scoring with three-pointer - her first of seven on the afternoon - and the hosts bolted to a 9-1 lead. By the time Henderson's bucket beat the buzzer to end the quarter, STAC had opened a 24-11 gap. A 7-0 Firebirds run brought the visitors closer in the second, and Maya Thomas hit the final two buckets of the half to bring UDC within five after a late 13-1 burst.

After taking a narrow 40-35 edge into halftime, the Lady Spartans scored the first nine points of the third quarter and exploded for 32 points in the session to blow the contest open. Erickson hit three treys and reeled off 14 points as STAC carried a commanding 72-47 advantage into the final quarter and were never threatened.

First round playoff action takes place on Wednesday, February 27, at campus sites of the high seeds. Roberts Wesleyan has clinched the #3 seed and will host on Wednesday, while NYIT, Daemen and Queens have earned playoff slots, with seeding to be determined by game results on Sunday. LIU Post receives a bye along with STAC, having clinched the top seed.
