After Slow Start, STAC Explodes for 75-47 Win at Bloomfield

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rallied for a 75-47 victory in a non-conference battle at Bloomfield College. The Spartans rolled to their third straight victory to start the season with Bloomfield remaining winless at 0-3.

STAC stumbled early as Jaylah Bennett hit a pair of three-pointers as part of a 12-0 run that staked the Bears to a 14-2 lead. Missy Sadler's basket broke the skid, but the teams traded baskets with the hosts holding a 22-10 lead after one quarter. The Spartans showed life early in the second with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes, but Bloomfield continued to lead at halftime as Emily Preston's basket trimmed the score to 30-25.

Preston then hit the first bucket after the intermission and STAC's defense turned up the pressure, holding the Bears scoreless over a span of nearly seven minutes as part of a game-changing 18-0 run. Julia Winnick hit a pair from deep as the Spartans opened a 45-32 lead, extending that gap to 56-38 after thirty minutes as Preston beat the buzzer with another lay-up.

Any hope the hosts had in rallying was ended in another 13-0 STAC outburst in the fourth, with Bloomfield held to just three points over the final seven minutes of play. In all, STAC outscored the Bears by a dominant 65-25 chasm over the final three quarters.

Preston led four Spartans in double-figures with game highs of 22 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, with Ruth Adams adding 15, Winnick 14, and Sadler 10. Bennett was the lead scorer for Bloomfield with 13.

The Spartans will now bid the continental United States aloha as they head to Hawaii for a pair of games, facing Hawaii Pacific on Friday, November 16, and Chaminade on Tuesday, November 20. Their next home game is Saturday, December 1, when Goldey-Beacom pays a visit for a 1:00 pm start.
