STAC Storms to 5th Straight Win with 89-54 Decision over Bridgeport

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rolled to an 89-54 win over the University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference meeting at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans improve to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECC, with Bridgeport falling to 4-4, 1-1.

Bridgeport was within striking distance at 12-8 with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter but a pair of threes by Julia Winnik and Zaria Thomas capped a 10-2 run to end the stanza with the Spartans holding a comfortable 22-10 lead. STAC turned up the defensive pressure in the second, holding the Purple Knights to just nine second-quarter points, and Chelsea Murphy netted the last seven points of the half to give the hosts a dominant 43-19 margin at halftime.

Winnik and Thomas continued to fire threes and Bridgeport never threatened as the lead extended to as many as 33 points before the final buzzer. Thomas led four Spartans in double-figures with a game-high 14 points, Winnik and Kellyann Averall added 11 each, and Emily Preston chipped in 10 with nine caroms to lead STAC. Kayla Hill led Bridgeport with 13, while Samnell Vonleh recorded 10.

The contest was the last conference game of the calendar year for STAC, as the Spartans return to action to host Concordia College on Saturday, December 15, in a 1:00 pm start.
