STAC Women Eliminated from ECC Tourney in 66-60 Loss to Molloy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team was eliminated from the East Coast Conference Tournament with a loss at the hands of Molloy College at the University of the District of Columbia. The Spartans' fell to 21-7 overall and their fate for NCAA Tournament consideration rests in the hands of the tourney committee, with STAC entering play as the #7 ranked team in the East, while 8th ranked Molloy improved to 22-8.

Though STAC swept the regular-season series, Molloy used an 8-0 run to open a 16-7 first quarter lead before holding a 19-12 advantage through 10 minutes. The Spartans were on fire in the second quarter, holding the Lions scoreless for nearly five minutes while a 10-0 run put the Regular-Season Co-Champions on top at 24-21. That momentum continued as Missy Sadler reeled off nine second-quarter point to stake her squad to a 36-24 halftime lead, outscoring the Lions by a 24-5 spread in the quarter.

After using a 23-0 second half run to out Roberts Wesleyan in Wednesday's quarter-final, Molloy again rode a strong second half to victory. STAC was held scoreless over the first 3:20 of the third quarter as a 9-0 run quickly closed the gap to 36-33. The Spartans regained their footing but were not able to increase the advantage, leading 47-44 entering the final frame.

Kathryn Gibson's three-pointer opened the fourth-quarter scoring to tie the game, and neither team lead by more than three points thereafter until a pair of Kadijah Dickson free throws gave Molloy a 56-52 edge with 4:19 to play. Lexi Huertas closed the deficit to one with a three-pointer but that was as close as STAC was to come, as Dickson hit a pair of layups and two free throws in the final three minutes to secure the win.

Emily Preston set the pace for STAC with 14 points and nine rebounds, Huertas added 13, Sadler scored 12, and Ruth Adams added 11. Dickson was the star for Molloy with a game-high 21 points, with Gabriella Aspuru chipping in 16.
