Adams Nets 27, Spartans Dominate Bridgeport, 71-42; STAC Clinches First Round ECC Bye

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rolled to a 71-42 victory in an East Coast Conference contest at the University of Bridgeport. The Spartans improve to 20-6 overall, marking the third straight season they have hit the 20-win plateau, and with their 12-3 conference mark the Spartans have clinched a first round bye in the ECC Tournament. Bridgeport lost its third straight to fall to 5-22, 3-12.

Earlier in the day, STAC was ranked #7 in the East Region in the official NCAA rankings and the Spartans wasted no time establishing their dominance on the floor. Zaria Thomas opened the scoring with a three-pointer just 15 seconds after the opening tip and scored eight points as the visitors opened a quick 12-6 lead.

While the Purple Knights trailed by but 14-10 after 10 minutes, STAC dropped the hammer early in the second quarter. Ruth Adams and Sarah Scerbak hit back-to-back treys in a quarter-opening 8-0 run, and Lexi Huertas added another from deep in the final seconds as the Spartans opened distance at 33-17 by halftime. Adams again was prominent as STAC scored the first six points of the third quarter and the margin was never less than 20 points the rest of the way.

Adams easily led all scorers with 27 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds in a stellar effort, while Thomas added 13 points and Emily Preston cleared 11 caroms. Janiece Loney and Alyzae Davis shared the scoring lead for the Purple Knights with 10 each.

Only one game remains in the 2019-20 regular season as the Spartans host Senior Day against the University of the District of Columbia in a 1:00 pm start, to be followed by the men's game. The Spartans will then advance to the ECC semifinals, which will be held, along with the finals, at UDC on March 7 and 8.
