Spartans Suffer Weekend Sweep with 67-49 Loss at Daemen in Regular Season Finale

The St. Thomas Aquinas Women's basketball team fell to a 67-49 defeat in their East Coast Conference regular season finale at Daemen College, 67-49. The Spartans now stand at 5-8 overall and 5-5 in the ECC, with regular season champs Daemen improving to 11-1, 9-0.

After absorbing a 17-point defeat on Saturday, Lexi Huertas hit a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run over the final three minutes of the first quarter to give STAC an 11-6 lead. The Spartans were held scoreless over the first four minutes of the second and Daemen's 9-0 run gave the hosts a 15-11 lead. In all, the Wildcats exploded for a 26-6 second quarter and their 32-17 halftime lead was enough to turn the score in their favor to stay.

Huertas had 12 points for STAC while Melissa Alifano added 10; Alhana Paige was on fire for Daemen with a game-high 28 points in the win.

The seedings are now set for this week's five-team East Coast Conference Women's Basketball Tournament field, with Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan at #s 1 and 2 respectively, followed by STAC, Molloy and Mercy. Action starts on Tuesday with a quarterfinal game featuring Mercy at Molloy, with the winner playing Daemen at Lumsden Gym on Thursday, March 4. Also on Thursday, the Spartans will travel to Rochester to face Roberts Wesleyan in the other semi-final at 6pm, with winners advancing to the finals on Saturday afternoon, March 6.
