STAC Women's Basketball Falls at Chestnut Hill, 61-52

Philadelphia, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team opened its mini two-game road trip with a 61-52 loss to Chestnut Hill College on Sunday afternoon in the City of Brotherly Love. STAC fell to 1-7 on the season while the host Griffins improved to 6-2.

How it Happened

  • After a back and forth first eight minutes of the opening quarter, where the teams combined for 22 total points, Chestnut Hill went on a 7-0 run to close the stanza and took a 20-9 advantage.
  • The Spartans fought their way back on the scoreboard in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffins by a 13-8 margin to get within six at 28-22 at halftime.
  • Alexa Huertas led the Spartans with 8 points in 20 minutes of action, while Leah Miller led all scorers for Chestnut Hill with 10 points.
  • After the break, the teams would open the third quarter, trading baskets early on, before Chestnut Hill would go on a 6-0 run giving themselves a nine-point lead with just under two and a half minutes to go in the frame. However, STAC would put together a 7-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to two at 40-38 by the end of the quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, an early Angelique Holguin free throw brought the Spartans to within one point at 40-39. However, the Griffins would get critical baskets from both Cassie Sebold and Brianna Rider in order to pull away in the late stages of the game. Chestnut Hill would also sink 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the 62-51 victory.

Top Performances

  • Alexa Huertas led STAC with 14 points, two rebounds and an assist, while playing all 40 minutes on Sunday.
  • Chanel Brodeur-Muir also finished in double-digits with 12 points, including going 5-of-12 from the field, and added eight boards.
  • Victoria Kurisko picked up eight points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes of action
