STAC Women's Basketball Falls to Roberts Wesleyan, 65-49

Rochester, N.Y. - In the first game of back-to-back contests against Roberts Wesleyan College, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans fell to the host Redhawks, 65-49 at the Voller Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

STAC drops to 6-12 and 5-4 in the ECC on the season while the Redhawks improve to 10-5, 7-2.

Sarah Ericson (11 points) and Alexa Huertas (10 points) scored in double-figures on the day for the Spartans, while Georgia Haverlock led all scorers with 19 points and Taryn Wilson tallied 16 points for Roberts Wesleyan.

STAC shot 30.8 percent from the field (20-65) and 40.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-22) in the conference tilt, while Roberts Wesleyan shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the floor and 38.5 percent (10-26) from three.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Sarah Ericson and Victoria Kurisko led the Spartans with three assists each in the game.
  • Ericson made 5 of her 12 field goal attempts.
  • STAC and Roberts Wesleyan pulled down 34 rebounds apiece in 40 minutes of action. Sarah Ericson picked up eight boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas forced five steals, with the Redhawks turning the ball over on 17 different occasions.
  • Rochester native Katie Bischoping picked up six points on the afternoon, hitting a pair of three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Roberts Wesleyan took an 11-6 lead into the first media timeout, before the Spartans were able to get within two (13-11) with just over three minutes left to play in the frame. The hosts would close quarter out on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 17-11 through the first ten minutes of play.
  • The Redhawks and Spartans traded a bucket apiece in the first 2:35 of play in the second quarter, before Roberts Wesleyan went up by 12 (25-13) and maintained that advantage despite a late surge by STAC before the half. Roberts would take a 35-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
  • Alexa Huertas and Sarah Ericson both led the Spartan scoring in the opening 20 minutes of action with six points each. Taryn Wilson led all scorers in the half with 14 points for Roberts Wesleyan.
  • The Redhawk offense would continue to score at will in the third quarter and extended the team's lead to 15 at 40-25. Roberts Wesleyan continued to maintain double-digit advantages of 16, 13, 15, 17 and ended the stanza with a 16-point lead (53-37).
  • In the fourth quarter, STAC would cut the margin on the scoreboard to as few as 12, but the hot Redhawk shooting would do in the visitors in maroon and gold, giving the hosts the first game of the back-to-back set.

It's a quick turnaround for St. Thomas Aquinas, as they wrap up this two-game series with Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday, January 30 at the Voller Athletic Center. Opening tip is set for 1pm. (Note: Sunday's contest is the makeup game from December 19)
