Late Run Pushes Pioneers Past Spartans, 9-5

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse team lost to LIU Post, 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.  Senior Ruth Pluviose had three goals for the Spartans while freshmen Marist Parr added two.

The Pioneers opened the game with an early goal from Stefani Vagelatos to take a 1-0 lead at the 28:41 mark.  Pluviose tied things up just a few minutes later with her first goal of the game at 25:44.  Both teams exchanged goals again as Emily Delaney scored for the Pioneers and Pluviose once again evened things out for the Spartans.

Tied 2-2 with 10-minutes remining in the first half the Pioneers put together a trio of goals from three different scorers; Vagelatos, Ryan McKinney and Jessica Marsh.  Pluviose struck once more for the Spartans to keep them within striking distance and close the half only down two, 5-3.

Parr came on strong in the second half scoring back to back goals to tie things back at five apiece. The game was a one point difference or tied for most of the second half but a late surge from LIU Post put the Pioneers back on top for good.  Four goals in the final 14-minutes of action saw the #3 Ranked Pioneers regain the lead and hold on for the win.

Kaitlyn Lonergan had three saves for the Spartans while Oliva Kirk recorded eight for Post.  The Pioneers held the advantage winning 11-5 on the draw controls.  Alyson Brennan had three draw controls for the Spartans while Pluviose grabbed two.

STAC will return to action on Wednesday when they face their next ranked opponent, Dowling College.  The Spartans are 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the ECC.
