Spartans Fall to Owls 14-6 in Season Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse team lost to Southern Connecticut, 14-6 in their season opener on Friday evening.  Kaitlyn Gutenberger and Alyson Brennan each scored two goals for the Spartans.  

The Owls were led by Samantha Cozzolino who had a total of five points with four goals and one assist.  Emily Johnson scored the first goal of the game followed by Cozzolino to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.  Kaitlyn Gutenberger scored the Spartans first goal of the season off a free position shot to bring the Spartans within one.  

The Owls stayed in control of the first half outscoring the Spartans, 9-3.  Alyson Brennan added two goals for the Spartans to open the second half and bring STAC within four.  Caroline Finnen had the assist on both goals and finished the game with three assists and one goal.  Southern Connecticut scored five of the final six goals to put the game away and secure the win.  

Freshmen Erin Sleurs scored her first career goal rounding out the Spartans scorers.  Sophomore goal keeper Laura Delorenzo had sixteen saves in the loss giving up eleven goals.  Fellow sophomore Katherine Feigenbaum saw 20 minutes of action in goal, recording six saves and giving up three goals.  

The Spartans will return to action on Sunday for their season opener against Indianapolis.  Game time is slated for 11:00 am.
