Spartans Fall to NYIT Bears in ECC Opener, 16-6

The St. Thomas Aquinas Women's Lacrosse team fell in defeat to New York Institute of Technology, 16-6 on Saturday afternoon. Caroline Finnen netted two goals, while Kaitlyn Gutenberger also tallied twice and added an assist.

In the first half, NYIT quickly gained a 3-0 lead, before Gutenberger scored her first of the afternoon. The Bears continued their offensive push, tallying five additional times in the frame, including a four goal outburst by Alyssa Milano and hat trick by Shannon Donovan. Kaitlyn Gutenberger was able to put her second goal of the game on the board midway through the opening half, but NYIT held a commanding 9-2 lead after one. 

The second half saw St. Thomas Aquinas attempt to narrow the score, as Caroline Finnen scored twice, while goals by Caitlin Verber and Jennifer Farrell gave the Spartans 6 for the game. However, NYIT's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, as Alyssa Milano and Shannon Donovan continued to lead the way, scoring twice and once more respectively, along with four additional Bears, giving the home team a ten goal advantage at the final buzzer.

Katherine Feigenbaum (L, 1-1), had 12 saves on the day for the Spartans. St. Thomas Aquinas College will return to action on Thursday, March 8th when they visit Dominican College.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, NY (Weather & Field Conditions Permitting).
