Spartans Suffer 17-5 Road Defeat At Stonehill College

The St. Thomas Aquinas Women's Lacrosse team fell to Stonehill College 17-5, in their first road contest of the season, in Easton, Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon.

Leanna Iobbi picked up two goals in the contest, while Danielle Cajou, Arielle Rodriguez and Kaitlyn Gutenberger were able to find the back of the Skyhawks net one time each. Katherine Feigenbaum got the start in net for STAC, making one save on seven shots faced, before being relieved by teammate Laura Delorenzo, who made 9 saves on 20 shots.

The first half began with a quick Stonehill barage of goals, as Emma Sullivan, Kaity Healey (2) and Oliva Pino put the Skyhawks up 4-0 just six minutes into the game. Leanna Iobbi tried to start a rally for STAC with her first of the day, making it 4-1, but Shannon Hughes and Jennifer Wheaton extended the Stonehill lead to 6-1 with just under twenty minutes to play in the opening stanza. Iobbi then connected for her second goal and Kaitlyn Gutenberger got on the stat sheet with a tally of her own, cutting the lead in half at 6-3. However, Sullivan would score her second of the contest, bringing the Skyhawk the lead to 7-3 as the teams retreated to their respective locker rooms for halftime.

Second half action saw the Spartans strike quickly to start the frame, as Arielle Rodriguez scored on a free position shot to pull STAC within three at 7-4. Unfortunately, the Stonehill offense would not quit and just six minutes later, Wheaton and Sullivan connected on back-to-back tallies pushing the score to 9-4. A Danielle Cajou goal made it 9-5, but that was all of the offense that St. Thomas Aquinas could muster for the remainder of the game. However, that was not the case for the home team Skyhawks, as they rattled off eight straight goals to close out the contest, with Wheaton, Pino, Kendall Fressle, Sullivan (2), Healey and Hughes (2) all lighting the lamp to make it a 17-5 final.

STAC goalies Katherine Feigenbaum (L, 1-1) 10:04 and Laura Delorenzo 49:56 patrolled the Spartan cage, while Bailey Grant (W, 2-0) picked up 6 saves and teammate Kaleigh Wright made 2 saves for Stonehill, with each seeing thirty minutes of action.

The Skyhawks had a decisive 40-17 shots advantage for the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1-2) will next travel to Caldwell University to take on the Cougars in a 4pm affair on Friday, March 1st at the Essex Valley School in West Caldwell, NJ.
