STAC Women's Lacrosse Falls to Mercy 20-8 in ECC Tournament Semis

The #4 seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team wrapped up their 2021 season, falling to #1 seed Mercy College, 20-8 on Thursday afternoon in the ECC Tournament Semifinal, held at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry, NY. STAC closed the season, slipping to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the ECC, while Mercy improves to 12-1, 5-0.

Leading the STAC offense in the playoff matchup was Danielle Cajou with five goals. Leanna Iobbi (2 goals) and Samantha Cerrato (1 goal), also contributed to the scoring on the afternoon. Goalie Laura Delorenzo (L, 4-5) got the start in net for the Spartans and stopped 10 of 30 shots faced.

In first half action, Mercy College jumped out to a 3-0 lead, just three minutes into the contest, on the strength of goals by Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk and Taylor Bishop (2 goals). The visiting Spartans would then score the next three goals, with Leanna Iobbi and Danielle Cajou (2 goals) both finding the back of the net to knot things at three apiece. Five straight Mavericks goals by Sydney Corley, Erin Chalich, Christina Lopreato, Juliana Keenan and Briana Corace would give the Mavericks lead an 8-3, before Iobbi's second of the game would make it 8-4. Corace and Mary Mackie would close out the scoring for the hosts in the last minute of the opening frame to give Mercy a 10-4 lead at the break.

The Mavericks would open the second half, scoring three more times, as Taylor Bishop, Juliana Keenan and Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk each tallied goals to give their team a 13-4 advantage with twenty minutes left in the match. Danielle Cajou then picked up a hat trick with her third of the game to make it 13-5. However, the powerful Mercy offense would strike again, for three more goals, as Sydney Corley and Bishop (2 goals) pushed the lead to 11 at 16-5. Cajou and Mary Mackie would then trade goals to make it 17-6 Mavericks. Cajou's fifth goal of the game, along with a Samantha Cerrato tally would close the gap on the scoreboard to nine at 17-8, but Mercy would pick up the final three goals of the postseason contest, with Kerri Cummings, Briana Corace and Erin Chalich all scoring insurance goals to give the hosts from Dobbs Ferry a 20-8 victory.

Mercy held a substantial 39-18 shots advantage for the game.
