Reggio's First Collegiate Goal Powers STAC to 16-15 Road Victory over Holy Family

Philadelphia, Pa. - Julia Reggio's first collegiate goal with 1:46 left in regulation, broke a 15-15 tie and powered St. Thomas Aquinas College to a 16-15 road triumph over Holy Family University on Wednesday afternoon at New Tiger Field.

STAC moves to 1-3 on the season, while Holy Family falls to 1-5. The win also gives Head Coach Genesis Pacheco her first first collegiate victory.

How it Happened

  • Holy Family struck for the first two goals of the contest, as Tori Wolstenholme and Rianna Shields each found the back of the cage to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans and Tigers combined to tally four times over the next six minutes, with Leanna Iobbi and Danielle Cajou scoring for STAC and Tatceyana Pulley and Yasmine Machlof netting goals for Holy Family to make it 4-2.
  • Back-to-back goals for the maroon and gold by Micaela Ross and Danielle Cajou in the final minute of play of the first quarter, tied the score at 4-4.
  • A late tally by Mackenzie Santucci put the Tigers back up by one at 5-4 at the end of opening stanza.
  • Holy Family took back the lead in the second quarter on consecutive goals by MacKenzie Santucci, giving her a hat trick, to make it 7-4. However the Spartans battled back to get within one, as Leanna Iobbi scored a pair of goals to give herself a hat trick and narrow the margin to 7-6 at halftime.
  • Both squads showed off their offensive prowess in the third quarter, as the teams combined to score 13 goals in the frame. Micaela Ross (3), Leanna Iobbi (2), Danielle Cajou, Jennifer Stevens and Samantha Cerrato all recorded goals, while Tori Wolstenholme (2), Payton Pugh, Mackenzie Santucci and Lynn Hardy were able to keep the game within reach with tallies of their own. St. Thomas Aquinas took a 14-12 lead through 45 minutes of action.
  • The host Tigers opened the final quarter, striking for three straight scores, as Tatceyana Pulley earned her second and third goals of the afternoon and Madeline Curran picked up her first on the day to give Holy Family back the lead, 15-14.
  • A STAC comeback was in the making in the final minutes of the contest. First, Alexa Paternoster scored with a man-up advantage free-position shot with just over four minutes to play to tie the game at 15 all.
  • The game-winner came via sophomore Julia Reggio, who is in her first season with the team. Reggio forced a Holy Family turnover by goalie Caitlyn Musick, scooped up the ground ball and proceeded to deposit it behind Musick with less than two minutes to play, to put the Spartans up 16-15.
  • Following the goal and the ensuing draw control, Holy Family was able to get two final tries to re-tie the game. Fortunately, a Tatceyana Pulley shot went wide of the cage, with Mackenzie Santucci's attempt being saved by STAC keeper Colleen Stevens as the final buzzer rang out to give St. Thomas Aquinas its first win of the season.
