STAC Tops Daemen in ECC Women's Soccer Opener, 2-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team opened the East Coast Conference portion of their schedule with a 2-1 victory at Daemen College. The Lady Spartans closed their season-opening three-game road swing with a 2-1 overall record, and stand at 1-0 in ECC action while Daemen fell to 1-3, 0-1.

For the second straight game, St. Thomas Aquinas struck early, with Sarah Colotti converting Mekenzi Moreau's cross for her second of the young season after just 8:20 of action. That narrow lead held up through halftime, with the host Wildcats holding a 9-5 edge in shots.

Another Moreau cross found teammate Kelsey Ardizzone for a big insurance marker at the 67:19 mark to open a 2-0 lead. Daemen trimmed that margin to 2-1 with just over seven minutes left on Jamie Boyar's third goal of the season, but STAC netminder Courtney Dumain refused to allow the equalizer, making five of her six saves in the second half to seal the win.

The Lady Spartans will finally enjoy the friendly confines of Spartan Field, playing their next two at home. That starts on Saturday, September 15, with an 11:00 start in an ECC battle with conference power Mercy College. They return to action on Tuesday, September 18, hosting Nyack for a 3:00 pm non-conference tilt.
