STAC Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to Mercy

Sparkill, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team fell 3-1 to Mercy College on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill, closing out the program's early season four-game homestand.

STAC scored first on its home pitch, finding the back of the net in the 22nd minute, as Amandajane Fuchs-White took the ball up field on the far side, went around several Mavericks defenders and put a shot past keeper Melissa Torres to make it 1-0. However, just moments later, Mercy's Claudia McKail would take a through ball in on a partial breakaway and beat goalie Colleen Stevens to even the score at one goal apiece. The visiting Mavericks would take three additional shots before the half ended, including one by Fernanda Castro that would ricochet off of the goal post, as time would expire.

After the break, the teams came out battling for every inch of the field, with the visitors getting the better of the offensive opportunities. In the 52nd minute a Fernanda Castro shot on net could not be corraled by Colleen Stevens, giving Dominique Bono an opportunity to score on the rebound and increasing the Mavericks lead to 2-1. Mercy would assure themselves of a win in the 80th minute, as Nikki Bermudez took a pass through the STAC defense from Jessica Hoyt and deposited it into the back of the goal to go up 3-1.

The Spartans had a total of three shots for the match, with one going on goal, while Mercy posted 19 shots, 11 on goal.
