STAC Women's Volleyball Closes Inaugural Season At Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Volleyball team closed its inaugural season on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Mercy University at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

STAC wraps up its 2023 campaign at 5-15 overall and 1-11 in the ECC, while Mercy improves to 14-7 and 7-5 and have secured the No. 3 seed in next week's ECC Championship.

How it Happened

  • First Set: Mercy jumped out to a 10-2 lead in set one before STAC rallied with a 7-3 run to cut the Mavericks lead to four, 13-9. The hosts then scored the next eight points to take a 21-9 lead. STAC later made it 23-12 before a Spartans service error and a Mavericks block gave Mercy the first set, 25-12.
  • Second Set: The Mavericks scored the first five points of the second set before St. Thomas Aquinas rallied to cut Mercy's lead to 9-6. Mercy tallied the next six points to increase the lead to 15-6 and later held a 22-13 lead before scoring three of the final four points in the set to take the set, 25-14.
  • Third Set: Mercy held a 5-4 lead in set three before going on a 10-2 run to take a 15-6 lead. STAC later cut the Mavericks lead to eight, 16-8, before Mercy answered with a 5-1 run to take a 21-9 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas went on a 5-2 spurt to make it 23-14 in favor of Mercy. A Mavericks kill and a Spartans attack error gave the Mavericks the 25-14 set three win and the match in three sets.

  • Mercy hit .426 with 36 kills, 34 digs, 12 aces and two blocks. St. Thomas Aquinas hit .086 with 23 kills, 25 digs, three aces and two blocks.
  • Junior right side Jaizahir Marrero-George finished with eight kills and five errors on 24 attacks for a .125 hitting percentage. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native added two service aces, five digs and a solo block to her stat line.
  • Freshman middle blocker Lorielys Ruiz totaled six kills and three digs in the match.
  • Freshman outside hitter/right side Natassia Romanoff finished with four kills and three errors on 13 attacks.
  • Junior setter Lea Venghaus tallied 20 assists (6.7 assists/set) and five digs.
  • Junior libero Aurivette Santos Bonilla also posted a team-high six digs (2.0 digs/set).
