Women Finish 2nd, Men 5th at Highlander Challenge

Led by sophomore Keeley Bateman, the Lady Spartan cross country team finished in 2nd place on Sunday, while the men took 5th with Joe Chegwidden crossing the line first.  Five members of the women's team recorded personal records on the Branch Brook Park 5K course.

Bateman finished in 9th place with a time of 19:29.  The records were set by Catherine Sandkuhl crossing the line in 19:51, followed by Katelyn Garvey (20:29), Ashley Weintraub (21:30), Lisa Brevogel (21:38) and Lauren Karpoich (21:48).  Junior Ashley Santa Teresa was next with a time of 23:28.

On the men’s side freshman Joe Chegwidden was the top men's finisher in 27:29.  He was the first Spartan finisher for the third consecutive race.  Teammates Mike Galonski and Alex Andre finished right behind him in 27:43 and 27:47 respectively.  Sophomore Matt Buell was just three seconds off his personal best in 28:09.  Garvenchy Nicolas was the final Spartan scorer in 29:32.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday, October 23rd at the ECC Championship at C.W. Post in Brookville, NY. The women's race will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the men at 11:00 AM.
