Spartan Alumni Run Kicks Off 2012 Season

The St. Thomas Aquinas College cross country program started the new season with a glimpse of the past as the Spartans held their annual Spartan Alumni Run at Tallman State Park.  Michael Galonski's course record breaking run set the pace for the men, while the Lady Spartans were lead by freshman Rebecca Fortoul.  Following the race, the Spartan squads, alumni and fans enjoyed a barbeque in the McNelis Commons dining hall.

Galonski finished in 16:38, breaking sophomore teammate Joseph Chegwidden's 2011 record by one second.  Rookie Joseph Capolino was the second Spartan finisher in 17:13.  Chegwidden followed in 17:27.  2009 graduate Elmer Eckert was the first alumni finisher in 17:37.  On the women's side, Fortoul got strong support from classmates Cecelia Pfleging (21:36) and Gabriela Sloezen (21:40).  Jen Bruen was the first alumni finisher for the women in 25:06.

The Spartans next race will be on September 8th at the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt Park.
