  • Spartan Baseball Players Stay Strong in the Off Season

    Spartan baseball players were selected to play in All-Star games for their respective summer leagues on July 12th. Sophomore outfielder, Nick Barbalato (West) and junior pitcher Mark Fochesato (East) played against one another in the NYCBL All-Star Game .
  • Mike Aviles Signs with the Seattle Mariners

    St. Thomas Aquinas baseball player, Mike Aviles has decided to sign with the Seattle Mariners and reported to camp on Sunday. The junior pitcher was selected in the 42nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft. As a Spartan, Aviles has worked 170 innings, struck out 114 batters, and compiled 13 wins.
  • Matt Matcovich and Chris Muniz Receive Top ECC Honors

    Seniors Matt Matcovich and Chris Muniz were both honored at the East Coast Conference 1st Annual Awards Dinner. Matcovich recieved the ECC Male Scholar-Athlete Award along with being named the Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year for this Spring. Muniz received the prestigious ECC Community and Character Award.
  • Mike Aviles Drafted to Seattle Mariners

    The Seattle Mariners selected Spartan hurler Mike Aviles in the 42nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Aviles becomes the third Aviles to be selected in the MLB draft. His father Brian was selected in the 18th round of the 1983 draft by the Braves and Mike's younger borther Robbie was selected the day before in the 7th round by the Cleveland Indians.
  • John Muller Pitching for the Lancaster Barnstormers

    St. Thomas Aquinas baseball player John Muller signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers for 2010. Muller, a 2007 graduate from St. Thomas Aquinas, is 25 years old and one of the youngest members of his team. The 6'2" right handed pitcher finished fifth in the Frontier League in 2009 with 12 saves.
  • Spartans Have Five Players Receive All ECC Honors

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team had five players receive post season all conference honors. Junior outfielder, Matt Marotta was named to the all-conference first team. George Wargo, David Schwartz, Brian LaMarr and Mark Fochesato were all named to the all-conference second team.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Mercy College in today's ECC tournament. Mike Apreda and Dan McDermott each had a hit for STAC. McDermott singled in the 3rd and Apreda singled in the 6th.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Molloy College, 6-0 in today's ECC tournament. Matt Smith and Kevin Ryan each had a hit for the Spartans. Ryan singled in the 1st and Smith singled in the 7th.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Mercy College, 7-6 Sunday afternoon. Matt Marotta was 3-for-3 with 2 runs. Dan McDermott, Fernando Peralta and Andrew Ahn all went 2-for-4. McDermott added 2 runs and an RBI while Ahn had 1 run and 3 RBI's.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost at Mercy College, 6-5 in yesterday's ECC game. Andrew Ahn went 3-for-4 with 2 runs. Matt Smith went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 3 RBI and David Schwartz went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Mercy College, 7-4 and 12-5 on Saturday afternoon. Matt Marotta went 2-for-3 with 1 run in both games for STAC. In the second game, Kevin Ryan was 3-for-3 and Mike Apreda was 3-for-4.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Molloy College, 7-2 in today's ECC game. The Spartans went 3-2 against the Lions for the series. Freshman Mike Apreda went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run while Matt Marotta went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI's and a run.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Mercy College, 5-3. Today's game represented senior day for STAC's five seniors; Brian LaMarr, Vin Malzahn, Matt Matcovich, Fernando Peralta and David Schwartz. Peralta, Matt Marotta and Andrew Ahn all went 2-for-4. Peralta added a run and an RBI.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team is hosting it's 1st Pasta Dinner on May 1st in the Romano Student Center. Please help support the Spartan baseball players by joining them at this event. Along with recognizing the team's accomplishments this season we'll be honoring a former Spartan and former Met Minor leaguer, Mike Sharpe.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team fell to Molloy College, 7-4 in Saturday evenings game. Matt Smith hit an RBI triple in the 3rd and David Schwartz had a 2-RBI double in the 8th but it was not enough to hold off the Lions. Smith was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Schwartz was 1-for-4 with a run and 2 RBI.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Molloy College, 2-1 in the first game of today's double header before picking up a tough 3-2 extra innings loss in game two. Matt Smith and George Wargo went 2-for-3 in game one with Smith adding a run and Wargo batted in two.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Molloy College, 7-3 in last nights ECC game. George Wargo hit an RBI single to score the go ahead run in the top of the tenth. Wargo was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Robert Frank got the win for STAC pitching 2.1 scoreless innings to close the game.
  • Matt Matcovich Named ECC Pitcher of the Week

    St. Thomas Aquinas baseball pitcher, Matt Matcovich was named ECC Pitcher of the Week. The senior went 9.1 scoreless innings for the week giving up only 4 hits and 2 walks. He tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and pitched a 7-inning complete game to shut out the Purple Knights.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Bridgeport 3-1 in Sundays ECC game. STAC went 5-0 against the Purple Knights this week along with a road win at Nyack for a 6-0 week. Freshman Mike Apreda went 3-for-5 and scored 2 runs for the Spartans.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team won 7-4 and 2-0 in todays ECC doubleheader against Bridgeport. Matt Marotta went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI in game one and 3-for-4 for the day. Senior pitcher Matt Matcovich went 7 scoreless innings only giving up two hits in the 2-0 win.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Bridgeport, 6-1 in todays ECC game. Matt Smith was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Fred Moore and Frank Salerno were 2-for-3 with an RBI each. Kevin Ryan earned the win on the mound.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Bridgeport 3-0 in Wednesday afternoon's ECC game. Matt Smith hit a 2-RBI single in the fifth to put STAC ahead 3-0. Sean Marsiglia picked up the win for STAC going five scoreless innings with 2 strike outs. Mark Fochesato picked up his fifth save for the Spartans.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team split with Dowling this afternoon, picking up a 1-0 win before losing 3-2 in 12 innings. Brian LaMarr went seven scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out 4 batters for the win. Mike Apreda hit an RBI-single to score Fernando Peralta who lead off with a triple in the third.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Dowling 3-2 in tonight's ECC contest. Matt Smith scored on a squeeze play by Matt Marotta in the eighth inning to give STAC the 3-2 lead. Mark Fochesato had the save for STAC as he struck out Dowlings final three batters in the ninth.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Dowling College, 5-3. Matt Matcovich went four innings on the mound to pick up the win while Mark Fochesato earned the save. The Spartans put together a 3-run fourth inning sparked by Matt Smith's 2-RBI single.
  • Kevin Ryan Named ECC Player of the Week

    St. Thomas Aquinas baseball player, Kevin Ryan was named the ECC Player of the Week for his strong performance last week. Ryan hit safely in all 3 games slugging a double and a homerun en route to a 5-for-9 week. He scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. The two-way played also pitched a perfect inning in relief in a 4-3 win over Nyack.

    The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Nyack College on Saturday afternoon, 4-3. The Spartans have now won 7 out of their last 8 games. George Wargo was 2-for-3 with a run. David Schwartz added a 2-run home run for the Spartans in the sixth.
