Three's a Charm: Spartan's Aviles Drafted By
Seattle
The Seattle Mariners selected Spartan hurler Mike Aviles in the
42nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Aviles becomes the third Aviles
to be selected in the MLB draft. His father Brian was selected
in the 18th round of the 1983 draft by the Braves and Mike's
younger borther Robbie was selected the day before in the 7th round
by the Cleveland Indians.
The day before the draft Aviles was invited to a pre-draft workout
at Fenway Park by the Boston Red Sox and threw well in front of
several scouts including Boston GM Theo Epstein. Aviles is only a
junior and still undecided as to whether he'll be returning for his
senior year or beginning his professional career in a couple
weeks.
So far during his career as a Spartan, Aviles has worked 170
innings, struck out 114 batters, and compiled 13 wins. He is either
tied or on the brink of breaking several of the Spartan pitching
records including wins, appearances, and innings pitched.
"Mike has been solid guy for us on the mound, " said Head Coach
Scott Muscat. "A true bulldog...rarely did he miss a start and he
always gave us a chance to win. He came into the season in great
physical condition, showed the ability to throw a baseball 90 mph
and made big improvements on his curveball. These are factors
scouts look for and that is why he was drafted. We would love to
have Mike return for his senior year and lead the pitching staff,
but if he turns pro now we are equally excited about the
opportunity before him."
