Spartans Take Two From Purple Knights

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team won 7-4 and 2-0 in todays ECC doubleheader against Bridgeport.  Matt Marotta went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI in game one and 3-for-4 for the day.  Senior pitcher Matt Matcovich went 7 scoreless innings only giving up two hits in the 2-0 win.

The Purple Knights got off to a quick start putting up three runs in the first inning and adding another run in the second.  Matt Marotta doubled in the second inning and scored off an RBI single by Georgw Wargo to bring STAC within one, 2-1.  The Spartans had a 4-run third inning highlighted by a Mike Apreda 2-RBI double.  Marotta added an RBI single to score Apreda.  The Spartans added two runs in the sixth and junior pitcher, Brian Aviles held Bridgeport scorless in the final five innings.

In game two, STAC scored both of their runs in the first inning.  Matt Smith singled and was sent home off an RBI double by Apreda.  Apreda advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off an RBI single by Marotta.   

The Spartans will travel to Bridgeport tomorrow for a 3 p.m. game.
