Spartans Hold Off Nyack, 4-3

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Nyack College on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.  The Spartans have now won 7 out of their last 8 games.  George Wargo was 2-for-3 with a run.  David Schwartz added a 2-run home run for the Spartans in the sixth.

Mike Apreda had an RBI single in the 5th to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.  Apreda scored Dan McDermott who led off the inning with a walk.  With one out in the sixth, Wargo double for his second hit of the day.  Schwartz hit his home run in the next at bat to give STAC a 3-0 lead over the Warriors.  The Spartans added a run in the seventh as Matt Maroota lead off with a single, advanced to second on an error and later stole third.  Andrew Ahn grounded out but picked up an RBI as Marotta scored to make it 4-0.

Nyack put up a fight in the 9th inning as they scored three runs with two outs before the Spartans were able to put them away.  Brian LaMarr picked up his first win of the season going 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, no runs and striking out 5 batters.  Mark Fochesato earned the save for the Spartans.

STAC will host Dowling on Tuesday before playing cross town rival Dominican College on Wednesday.  Both games will be played at the Vet at 3:00 PM.
