Mavericks Take Two From Spartans

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to Mercy College, 7-4 and 12-5 on Saturday afternoon.  Matt Marotta went 2-for-3 with 1 run in both games for STAC.  In the second game, Kevin Ryan was 3-for-3 and Mike Apreda was 3-for-4.

In game one STAC score a run in the first inning off a Matt Smith RBI single that scored Marotta who reached off a double.  George Wargo hit a solo home run in the second inning to give STAC a 2-1 lead.  Mercy regained the lead after a three run third inning.  Both teams went scoreless until the Spartans added two runs in the sixth highlighted by RBI singles from Fred Moore and Fernando Peralta to tie the game 4-4.  The Mavericks had a strong ninth inning adding three runs and pulling off the win.    

In the second game of the day, the Spartans got on the board first jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two innings.  Mercy rattled off five runs in the 3rd to take a 5-4 lead and then continued to add to their lead with two runs in both the 4th and the 5th innings.  The Spartans added another run in the 5th off an RBI sac-fly from Dan McDermott to score Marotta.  The Mavericks finished the game off strong again as they scored three more runs in the seventh. 

STAC will complete the regular season with a single game at Mercy on Sunday.  The Spartans have clinched the #3 seed in the ECC tournament.
