The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Queens College in both games this afternoon, 8-7 and 2-0. STAC won 4 out of 5 games in the series. Nick Barbalato went 3-for-8 with 3 runs and 3 RBI for the day while Andrew Ahn went 4-for-7 with a run and 2 RBI.
The Spartans got off to a 1-0 lead as Vin Malzahn hit an RBI double in the 1st to score Matt Smith. Queens put together a 3 run inning in the second, however STAC tied it up in the top of the 3rd with RBI singles from Barbalato and Ahn. Barbalato hit a single to right with runners on second and third to regain the lead for the Spartans in the 4th. Ahn followed with another RBI single and scored on a ground out by Smith to give STAC a 7-3 lead. With two outs in the 8th, Smith scored on an fielding error giving STAC an 8-3 lead. Queens rallied in the 9th scoring 4 runs but the Spartans were able to hold on for the 8-7 win.
In game two, Joe Ferrara went 5 innings in the shutout giving up 2 hit and striking out 6. Mark Fochesato earned the save with 4 strike outs and 2 hits. Smith put STAC on the board with an RBI single in the 4th scoring Barbalato and Mike Walraven added an RBI sac-fly to score Fred Moore in the 7th.
STAC will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Concordia for a 3:00 game.
