Spartans Bounce Back in Nightcap, Salvage Twin-Bill Split with UMass-Lowell

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team saw a late lead evaporate in a 10-7 loss against UMass-Lowell, but battled back to earn a 6-5 victory in the nightacap to take home a split in Flemington, NJ. The win was the Spartans' first of the season, as their overall record stands at 1-3, while Lowell comes in at 1-2.

Game one was a continuation of the Spartans' early frustration, as they suffered their third straight setback in their opponents' final at bat. George Wargo (HR, three RBI) and Stanley Susana (HR, two RBI) staked St. Thomas Aquinas to a 7-2 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, but the bullpen was unable to hold it as Lowell stormed back for eight runs over the final three frames. The deciding blow came in the last of the ninth with two outs after the River Hawks tied the game at 7-7, when Cam Kneeland's three-run homer sealed the Spartans' fate. Nick D'Angelo was tagged with the loss in relief, his first of the season.

Despite some anxious moments, STAC bounced back in game two to take home victory number one of the young season. A Matt Marotta RBI single spurred a second-inning rally that would give the Spartans a 4-2 lead. Tim Tedesco turned in a strong relief outing, but two unearned runs in the top of the seventh and final inning allowed the visitors to tie things up at 7-7. This time STAC would come through, as a Lowell error in the bottom half allowed Andrew Romanella to come home with the deciding tally. Tedesco allowed three runs (one earned) and five hits in 4.1 innings of relief, but it was Jon Scott who recorded the final two outs of the seventh to pick up the win.

The Spartans return to Provident Bank Park for their next two games - this Tuesday, February 28 they host Bloomfield College before returning to action on Friday, March 2, when Post University makes their first trip to "The Bank." Both games have first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
