Spartan Baseball Downs Bloomfield, 6-4; Records First Home Win at Provident Bank Park

Andrew Hancsak's RBI triple broke a 3-3 tie and Matt Marotta worked four strong innings of relief to lead the St. Thomas Aquinas college baseball team to a 6-4 victory over Bloomfield College. It was the Spartans first victory at Provident Bank Park and second straight overall, improving their record to 2-3. The visiting Deacons remain winless on the young campaign with an 0-3 mark.

Bloomfield struck right away, stringing three hits together against Spartan starter Joe Ferrara, with Rafael Medina's single plating Emilio Fernandez with the game's first run. The Spartans battled back for three runs on just two hits in the second, capitalizing on the wildness of Deacon starter Charles Fletcher. STAC took advantage of three walks in the inning, with Nick Barbalato's sac fly and Joe Antenucci's single bringing home the final two runs.

The visitors would quickly deadlock things in the following frame, paced by an Anthony Koban run-scoring single. Spartan reliever Ken Frawley uncorked a wild pitch to yield the tying run. Though the Spartans would have Fletcher on the ropes, they were unable to take advantage again until breaking through with the decisive rally in the fifth.

With one out, Fletcher hit George Wargo with a pitch - the Deacon's second hit batsman to go with seven walks yielded in just five innings of work. Hanczak followed with a deep triple into the right-centerfield gap, plating Wargo from first. Stanley Susana's sac fly brought in Hanczak and STAC was ahead to stay.

They plated an insurance marker in the eighth as a Barbalato RBI single brought in Nick D'Angelo and the rest was up to Marotta, who yielded only an unearned run in the ninth in four innings of work, preserving the first collegiate victory for freshman Mike Roestenberg in relief. Roestenberg tossed a scoreless fifth, while Marotta worked the final four, scattering just three hits to take home the save.

Barbalato recorded two RBIs and Hancsak posted two hits to lead the offense, while Frawley added 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to a tremendous effort from the Spartan bullpen, which allowed just one unearned run and four hits over the final 6.1 innings.

The Spartans return to action this Friday, March 2, when Post University pays its first visit to Provident Bank Park, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm. The following day they travel for another non-conference tilt - a twin-bill at Adelphi University - before taking off for their annual weeklong trip to sunny Florida in which they will play six games before returning home.
