Spartans Streak to Seven! Baseball Team Edges New Haven, 3-2; Seeking Sunshine State Sweep

Matt Marotta tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win for the St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team, which topped the University of New Haven, 3-2. The Spartans have now won seven straight, including all five on their current Florida trek, which wraps up Wednesday. In taking their second straight one-run victory, STAC took its ninth victory in its last 11 games to improve to 9-5 overall, while the Chargers slipped to 4-3 after dropping their third game in four.

The Spartans pushed a run across in the bottom of the first of UNH starter Joey Royer, as Stanley Susana's two-out single scored East Coast Conference Player-of-the-Week Frank Salerno. They added another in the third when a George Wargo hit plated Nick Barbalato from second.

Marotta would face his only real threat in the top of the fourth, as he yielded his first hit and the Chargers would load the bases with one out. The senior righty, who threw a six-inning no-hitter just over a week ago, would quell the threat, striking out Brendon Buckley and inducing Andrew Johnson into an inning-ending ground out. STAC would post another singleton in bottom of the frame when Joe Antenucci's grounder with the bags loaded brought home Mike Russo to stake STAC to a 3-0 lead.

Through seven innings, New Haven had recorded just a pair of singles of Marotta when his day was ended. Reliever Robert Frank would fall victim to a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, as a Susana error opened the door for an RBI single by Ryan Brocket, but Jon Scott would come on with none out to put out the fire, yielding a run-scoring double play ball to David Wirkus and fanning Buckley to retire the side. Joe DePool would work a scoreless ninth to earn his second save in as many days, nailing down the victory for Marotta, who improved to 2-0. Royer took the loss for New Haven, his record falling to 1-1.

The Spartans have just one game remaining in their Sunshine State Six, which winds up on Wednesday, March 14 against St. Michael's College, after which the team will return north to host Southern New Hampshire University in a pair of twin-bills at Provident Bank Park on Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18. Both double-headers are scheduled to start at 12:00 noon.
