Spartans Baseball Soars in Regional, National Rankings

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team, which has won 13 straight games and 19-of-20, moved up in regional rankings and cracked the nation's top 25 in polling released this week.

Standing with an all-time school record in wins with a 35-11 mark, the Spartans were first recognized by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper by moving into a tie for the #30 slot in their national poll, the first time the program has received such recognition. The hits kept coming as the NCBWA moved STAC up to the #2 position in the East Region, the highest ever for the Spartans.

That was followed by the NCBWA's National Rankings, which saw St. Thomas Aquinas College rewarded with a #22 ranking in the country. Finally, on Wednesday, the NCAA announced its final regional ranking of the regular-season, placing the Spartans in the East's #3 position, two spots up from last week's mark.

St. Thomas Aquinas enters this week's East Coast Conference Tournament as the #1 seed when they open action against #4 University of Bridgeport this Thursday at host Dowling College. The winner of the double-elimination format receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Six berths in all will be awarded in the region, with automatic bids going to the winners of the ECC, Northeast-10, and Central Atlantic Collegiate conferences. The other three will be issued to the top three remaining seeds based on ranking, as the Spartans are in search of their first NCAA Tourney bid.
