9th Inning Rally Lifts Spartans over Dominican, 6-5

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the 9th and held on to defeat Dominican College, 6-5, at Provident Bank Park. Kenny Kirshner's RBI single proved to be the difference as the Spartans topped their nearby rivals in their final at bat for the second time in a week. STAC improves to 13-8 with the win, while Dominican slides to 6-10.

With Dominican as the home team, the Chargers jumped in front with a 2nd inning run off STAC starter Eric Cooper. The Spartans answered in the next frame when Stanley Susana tripled in Kirshner and came home on Joe Boland's single to make the score 2-1, but Dominican would score another in the bottom half to knot the score.

STAC would fall behind in the last of the 7th, with an infield error opening the door to three unearned Charger runs, making the tally 5-2. The Spartans would narrow the gap with a big run in the eighth, with Susana's grounder bringing in Baerga, who led off with a single. That would set the stage for a wild 9th inning.

Errors would play a huge role in the comeback, with Sunday landing on second base on an outfield error. Nick D'Angelo would reach on another outfield error, putting runners on second and third with one out, but St. Thomas Aquinas was down to its last out after a strikeout. Baerga would then put the ball in play, bringing home two runs to tie the score on the third error of the inning, and leaving the go-ahead marker on second. Kirshner provided the Spartans' only hit of the inning, with his RBI single plating Baerga.

The drama was far from over, as reliever Joe Grimaldi - who worked a scoreless 8th inning - walked the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 9th. He gave way to Brian Tompkins, who saw a single, a sacrifice bunt, and a walk load the bases with one down. Tompkins would prevail, however, inducing a game-ending double-play grounder to seal the win.

Kirshner and Susana had two hits each, with Grimaldi's win accounting for his first decision of the year, and Tompkins earning his first save.

In a late addition to the schedule, The Spartans return to action tomorrow at Pace University. This weekend they will play a four-game East Coast Conference series against Mercy College, which begins with a single road game on Friday, April 4. The teams shift to Provident Bank Park for a noon double-dip on Saturday, before wrapping up back in Westchester on Sunday.
